Integrated life saving response to drought and conflict affected communities

This project supports the immediate needs of the most vulnerable children, internally displaced people and host communities affected by conflict, drought and desert grasshoppers in Moyale (woreda) district in Dawa Zone, Somali region.

The intervention areas are the 5 most affected kebeles (neighborhoods): Chamuk, Malba, Legsure, Elgof and Karay. The project supports students by offering them safe and healthy learning spaces, access to water in schools, improvement of food safety and school support through the distribution of teaching materials. The project also targets host communities by offering them vaccination campaigns aimed at improving livestock health (essential for the local economy) and distributing agricultural materials and livestock.

Finally, the project aims to improve and strengthen the early identification and referral of malnourished children under five and pregnant or lactating women (PLW) to appropriate health facilities.

• Rehabilitation of 5 schools (2,817 total students) through the reconstruction of classrooms, water supply system, and latrines
• Distribution of teaching materials
• Improving access to nutritional treatment and the management of acute malnutrition for children up to 5 years and pregnant and lactating women in health facilities for internally displaced persons and host communities
• Contribution to the improvement of food security of pastoralists affected by drought and conflict through the distribution of livestock and facilitating the vaccination of livestock

• Rehabilitation of 5 schools (classrooms, access to water, latrines)

• Distribution of livestock in order to improve the food security of the pastoral community
• Access to nutritional treatment for children up to 5 years and pregnant and breastfeeding women

• Fair access to safe, healthy and gender-sensitive learning environments for boys and girls affected by drought emergencies
