Water for Syrian refugee children in Lebanon

As part of the international response to the Syrian refugee emergency, this emergency programme consists of 8 initiatives in the WASH (water and sanitation) sector from November 2012 to April 2018.

The projects improve the living conditions of Syrian refugees and Lebanese host communities in the north and south of Lebanon in terms of access to safe water, availability of sanitation facilities and promotion of good hygiene and sanitation practices with a special focus on children.

• Infrastructural works of extension/rehabilitation of drinking water distribution networks, rehabilitation of water sources, digging of wells, rehabilitation of water tanks, provision of pumps and water chlorination systems
• Toilet and sanitation rehabilitation works in 10 schools
• Emergency distribution of fuel to water pumping stations to increase the flow of water in the networks
• Emergency distribution of water by tanker trucks
• Distribution of hygiene kits, cleaning materials, water filters and other essentials
• Hygiene promotion campaigns in schools and community-wide information and awareness campaigns on personal and environmental hygiene and appropriate water use
• Distribution of water tanks to households
• Improvement of wastewater collection and disposal systems, including construction of septic tanks and operation of wastewater disposal services
• Construction/rehabilitation of toilets in informal refugee camps
