Every map tells a story: the volume “Global Geography of Social Challenges” is now online

CISP is pleased to announce an important new resource for schools and educators. The new textbook Global Geography of Social Challenges is now available online and free to download. Developed under CISP’s coordination, the volume features contributions from university professors and cartography specialists including Dino Gavinelli, Chiara Pirovano, and Giulia Tagliente.
Created as part of the European project GET – It’s Global Education Time, the volume offers a fresh perspective on geography. It responds directly to the needs of today’s global teachers and students, taking readers on a journey through maps, stories, and global challenges—from inequalities and climate change to migration.

A new approach for teachers

Specifically designed for geography lessons, the textbook stands out for its inherently interdisciplinary nature. This makes it an exceptionally valuable resource for teachers of other subjects as well, such as history, civics, and science.
The material is fully optimized for digital learning environments through interactive links and numerous thematic maps. Its self-contained, independent chapters offer maximum teaching flexibility: educators can use individual sections as standalone learning units or utilize the maps on their own as independent working tools.

A new perspective for learners

Today’s teenagers are growing up in a world deeply marked by the climate crisis, global migration, and systemic inequalities. Yet, they often lack the educational tools needed to critically read these dynamics.
This manual uses engaging map projections to practically demonstrate that every map tells a story. Written in a direct, conversational tone that avoids dense academic jargon, the volume puts young people at the center. It builds the learning process directly around the questions students are already asking in their daily lives.

The GET Project

The project GET – Global Education Time: From school curricula to youth actions for sustainable development is a CISP initiative co-funded by the European Union. Implemented by 13 partners across 8 European countries, it aims to strengthen the capacity of education systems through Global Citizenship Education.
GET publishes studies, teaching and learning units, and other materials developed and tested by European educators and teachers. It fosters active student engagement and promotes dialogue with national educational authorities and civil society.
