Emergency in Hodh El Chargui

The project intervenes in the Hodh El Chargui region, in the municipalities of Fassala and Adel Bagrou, to improve food and nutrition security conditions and access to essential health, protection and water services for the most vulnerable populations. The intervention responds to the needs of host communities, refugees, returnees through an integrated approach that combines monetary assistance, support for livelihoods and agro-pastoral production, improved access to water and sanitation, health and nutrition assistance and capacity building of local communities and institutions. Particular attention is paid to women, children and people with disabilities, promoting resilience, inclusion and community participation.

General objective
To contribute to strengthening the resilience of the most vulnerable populations to the risk of increasing food insecurity and difficulties in accessing quality hygiene, health and nutrition services, through an integrated approach that promotes the active role of women in the Hodh El Chargui region.

Specific objective
To improve food and nutrition security conditions and access to health and protection services for refugees, returnees and host communities in the Moughataa of Bassikounou and Adel Bagrou.

• Multifunctional monetary assistance to 300 vulnerable families, with particular attention to households with children suffering from moderate or severe acute malnutrition.
• Livestock distribution and livelihood support for vulnerable farming families, accompanied by the deployment of hydroponic systems for feed production.
• Reactivation and support of community gardens managed by women’s cooperatives, through seeds, equipment, training and technical assistance in the agroecological field.
• Construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems and water and soil management and conservation interventions.
• Creation and strengthening of community committees for the sustainable management of water resources and training of local authorities on WASH policies.
• Organization of mobile clinics for the provision of primary care, maternal and child health services, screening and nutritional management, psychosocial support and referral of the most complex cases.
• Strengthening of community epidemiological surveillance and training of volunteers and community agents.
• Distribution of hygiene and dignity kits to the most vulnerable women and girls.
• Capacity building of local health facilities through equipment, medicines and staff training.
• Construction and rehabilitation of latrines, showers and sinks in schools, health centres and other public spaces, accompanied by hygiene awareness activities. 

RESULTS

1. Reduction of the food vulnerabilities of the target communities.
2. Increased access to drinking water and improved management of water resources for human and productive use.
3. Improving access to health, sanitation and protection services in target communities.

OUTPUTS

• 300 families reached by monetary assistance.
• 800 goats distributed.
• 70 hydroponic systems/gardens created.

• 10 women’s cooperatives trained on agroecological techniques.

• 12,000 medical, psychosocial and nutritional consultations through mobile clinics.
