Description

Development, promotion and facilitation of inclusive access to higher education on human and sustainable development for civil society actors and civil servants.

In particular:

  • Enhancement of the Master’s in Cooperation and Human Development at Kenyatta University (Nairobi, Kenya) for civil servants and other development actors
  • Implementation of short courses/summer schools/seminars for civil servants and civil society organisations (CSOs)
  • Collaboration with academic institutions for the development and production of quality research
  • Scholarships for disadvantaged people (income, gender, disability)
  • Strengthening of the Cooperation and Development Network (CDN).

Goals

Since 2003, the Government of Kenya has had a systematic dialogue with donors on aid and development effectiveness and, since May 2018, has adopted the Effective Development Cooperation Strategic Plan 2018-2022 co-chaired by AICS within the framework of the Coordination Group on Development Effectiveness (GPEDC). Through the implementation of planned activities aimed at both civil servants and staff of Development Partners, the intervention aims to advance collaboration and joint management of programmes and bridge the “knowledge gap” on development issues, the cause of a structural weakness in the effectiveness of projects that are implemented in the country, as well as to provide tools and empirical data through the development of applied research and expertise in this area. On this front, the present project intends to strengthen higher educational activities already underway and to also promote research and evaluation activities on the effectiveness of actions and programmes, through the already existing collaboration between universities (Pavia, Kenyatta and Tangaza College), development agencies (AICS and UNDP) and CISP.

Activities

  • Initiation of the evaluation process and revision of the curriculum of the Master’s in Economics Cooperation and Human Development (MECOHD).
  • Support to the TUC in the evaluation and revision of the curriculum of the University Diploma course.
  • Development of a short course curriculum aimed at strengthening the basic skills of civil servants and civil society organisations.
  • Organisation and implementation of the course (3 master cycles) by awarding scholarships and carrying out teaching activities.
  • Organisation of seminars, short courses, conferences.
  • Broadening access to information and cooperation with foreign universities.
  • Strengthening of existing partnerships and the formalisation of new strategic partnership agreements.
  • Carrying out studies, research and in-depth investigations to be shared with other universities and research centres.
  • Dissemination of results.
  • Organisation of training activities for researchers through seminars and co-mentoring of research conducted by students.
  • Activation of the national and international network through the implementation of internships and exchanges of staff and students among network countries and programme promotion.
  • Promotion of Human Development programmes and partner academic institutions.

Output and results

  • Improved didactic quality of higher education courses activated at Kenyatta University in the field of development cooperation.
  • Increased number of participants in university higher education courses on development issues.
  • Enhanced inter-university exchanges abroad between beneficiary universities in Kenya and other universities and research centres.
  • Dissemination of good practices in the field of development effectiveness, starting from the Kenyan experience.
