Mozambique

CISP has been operating in Mozambique since 2014, with interventions focused on the food and nutritional security of rural families, reducing vulnerability to climate change, supporting agricultural value chains, the economic empowerment of women and youth, promoting social cohesion through cultural and artistic activities, strengthening Mozambican civil society and local government structures, and preventing and combating all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). CISP operates in the central and northern regions of the country, specifically in the provinces of Manica, Sofala, Tete, Niassa, Zambézia, Nampula, and Cabo Delgado.

Approach

In Mozambique, CISP applies a Triple Nexus (Humanitarian-Development-Peace) approach, integrating emergency interventions and responses to humanitarian and climate crises with resilience-building, the promotion of durable solutions, and conflict prevention and resolution activities, thereby contributing to improved social cohesion in the country. In all its interventions, CISP adopts a gender-transformative approach aimed not only at promoting equitable participation and access to resources and opportunities but also at challenging discriminatory social norms and addressing the root structural causes of inequality and gender-based violence. The organization promotes the valorization of local experience and knowledge, alongside the active leadership and ownership of target groups.

Agriculture and Food Security

The organization works to strengthen local food systems, directing its efforts toward climate resilience, environmental, social, and economic sustainability, and the development of micro and small agricultural enterprises. CISP promotes the adoption of agroecological techniques and practices while strengthening tools and strategies for disaster risk reduction, mitigation, and management. In collaboration with Italian universities and national research centers, it supports the development and dissemination of innovative solutions and technologies appropriate for local agricultural contexts. Particular attention is given to strengthening women’s producer organizations and promoting women’s leadership and participation in decision-making processes within the agricultural sector.

Social Cohesion

CISP supports the processes of building sustainable peace, peaceful coexistence, and national reconciliation in the country. The organization works to strengthen Mozambican civil society, youth and women’s organizations, and political participation processes. Through Art for Social Change methodologies, support for cultural and sports initiatives and productions, educational activities in schools, and awareness-raising campaigns in communities, CISP helps foster a culture based on tolerance, acceptance of diversity, and peaceful coexistence.

Protection and Combating Gender-Based Violence

The organization addresses the prevention of and response to GBV through an integrated approach based on two fundamental pillars:

  1. Support for strengthening response services: Enhancing both community-based and government services to provide a systemic response to gender-based violence.
  2. Social and Behavioural Change (SBC): Challenging discriminatory social norms and beliefs, and supporting protective behaviors and social norms through community dialogues and art for social change.
